Use of Netted-cage Traps in Population Management and Research of Urban White-tailed Deer

چکیده
Growing populations of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in urban areas often conflict with local human interests and present challenges to natural resource managers. Netted-cage traps can be an important tool for management of urban deer populations where traditional control methods may not be appropriate or acceptable. We discuss the design of netted-cage traps, trapping techniques, and the handling of trapped deer. Pages 138-142 in C. D. Lee and S.E. Hygnstrom, eds. Thirteenth Great Plains Wildl. Damage Control Workshop Proc., Published by Kansas State University Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service.

Evaluation of a Trap-Sterilize-Release Program for White-tailed Deer Management in Highland Park, Illinois, 2002-2005
Surgical tubal ligation was used for the sterilization of urban free-ranging whitetailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) as part of a larger study investigating the influences of intact, sterile females on population and behavior. Over three years, 103 female and 78 male individual deer were captured in Highland Park, Illinois, and a subset of females were sterilized by tubal ligation and/or tran...

Immunocontraceptive vaccines have shown some promise for fertility control of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in urban and suburban habitats where traditional methods of population control may not be applicable. Currently, the only contraceptive vaccine approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use in white-tailed deer is GonaConTM Immunocontraceptive Vaccine, but it i...
متن کاملSpace Use and Survival of White-Tailed Deer in an Exurban Landscape
Exurban development is nonmetropolitan, residential development characterized by a human population density and average property size intermediate between suburban and rural areas. Although growth in exurban areas is outpacing that of urban, suburban, or rural landscapes, studies of deer (Odocoileus spp.) ecology in exurban areas are nonexistent. During 2003–2005, we studied space use (i.e., se...
متن کاملFactors affecting space use overlap by white-tailed deer in an urban landscape
Variation in the size and overlap of space use by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) has broad implications for managing deer–human conflicts and disease spread and transmission in urban landscapes. Understanding which factors affect overlap of home range by various segments (i.e., age, sex) of an urban deer population has implications to direct contact between deer on disease epidemiol...

We evaluated population management programs for controlling chronic wasting disease (CWD) in wild white-tailed deer in Illinois between November 2002 and March 2008. The intervention consisted of measures of deer removal from three deer population control programs: Illinois Department of Natural Resources culling, deer population control permits and nuisance deer removal permits. We included in...
